What's the deal with ABA?
ABA stands for "Applied Behavior Analysis."
As its name suggests, the approach is based on the psychological theory of behaviorism. It utilizes compliance-based techniques to condition neurodivergent people into behaving more neurotypical (i.e., making eye contact, not stimming, not producing echolalia). The autistic community has been very vocal about the harmfulness of these practices to them, which is well explained by the Therapist Neurodiversity Collective here. While some pediatricians have recommended these therapies in the past, there is now a plethora of new information available. Hana Speech Therapy does not recommend ABA.
